This is the final call for admission to the MA program offered by the University of Kerala for the academic year 2025-2027.

The eligibility criteria is any bachelor’s degree.
A total of 18 seats are offered.
The entrance exam for 2024 had 100 objective questions, with 1 mark each, and a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
The curriculum framework for the MA program is divided into 4 semesters, over 2 years. Semester 1 has 4 courses: Principles and Methods in Archaeology, World Prehistory, Indian Prehistory, and Ancient Indian History. The second semester also has 4 courses: Proto History, Early Iron Age of India, Early Indian Art, and Indian Architecture. The third semester has 6 courses, namely: Research Methodology, Ancient Indian Iconography, Archaeology of Kerala, Heritage & Museum Management, Pottery and Ceramics, and Zooarchaeology in Practice.
The final semester has 6 courses, on Palaeography & Epigraphy, Ancient Indian Numismatics, Science in Archaeology, a Dissertation, Field Archaeology (Exploration and Excavation), and Field Archaeology (Study Tour of Monuments). Apart from these, courses titled Introduction to Archaeology, Human Origin and Evolution, and Essential Computer Applications for Archaeology will be taught in any of the 4 semesters.
Established in 1997 under Dr. Ajit Kumar, the Department of Archaeology at the University of Kerala offers MA and PhD programs, with a focus on field-oriented research.
It has a well-equipped Zooarchaeology laboratory, a GIS lab, and a Ceramic Petrology Laboratory, and a library. The department also publishes Heritage, an annual journal of multidisciplinary studies in archaeology and is also credited with other departmental publications. It also houses a museum displaying artifacts from Kerala and other parts of India. An outdoor archaeological park is also maintained. The department also offers consultancy services in various domains.
Several excavations have been conducted by the department, including Vizhinjam, Kottapuram, Kumbla, Kuttikkol, Enadimangalam, Navinal, and Juna Khatiya. It is the only department in South India involved in research related to the Harappan Civilization. The Kerala Megalithic Gazetteer project is also conducted by the department. The institution is also involved in the documentation of art, architecture, and iconography in temples all over Kerala, and ethnographic studies and experimental archaeology to understand the living traditions of Kerala and Gujarat.
The department is currently headed by Dr. Abhayan G.S. The faculty members include eminent scholars like Dr. Preeta Nayar, Dr. Rajesh S.V, Dr. Sheena V.R, and Sri Renjeshlal S.R.
