The admissions for the MA Program in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History for the academic year 2025-27 begins from 1st May 2025.

Latest; As per our source: Entrance Exam is scheduled for June 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM. (Please refer to your Hall ticket for the confirmation of the same)
Your Hall Ticket will be released by MSU on June 9, 2025. This ticket will confirm your exam date and timing, so please keep a close eye on your email.

The technical problem stopping you from selecting the Archaeology Program (M.A) on the GCAS Portal is now fixed.

GCAS FORM UPDATE: As per information received from the authorities, the application portal for M.A. (Archaeology) on GCAS has not been started yet. This is why applicants are currently unable to complete the form beyond 10%. Students are advised to complete the Quick Registration on GCAS before May 31, 2025 and securely retain their Login ID and Password. The complete application form is expected to open after the Entrance Examination.
ENTRANCE REGISTRATION: Applicants are required to fill the form for the Entrance Examination and pay the registration fees of ₹700 on the MSUIS portal. The last date for completing this step is May 31, 2025. For more help Whatsapp on: +91 8826672990

There is no specified written test syllabus prescribed. A holistic understanding of the subject is necessary.

Eligibility: Any graduate with a degree in Archaeology or from Science, Technology, Social Sciences or Humanities with a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent Grade is eligible to apply.
Selection Process: Apart from the merit, the candidates will have to clear an entrance test and personal interview conducted by the Department. The syllabus and dates, paper pattern and other details for the same will be updated later.

Course curriculum: The curriculum offered by MSU is comprehensive, focusing on both- theory and fieldwork. The program consists of 4 semesters, spread over two years. The first three semesters have a project, and the fourth semester requires a Dissertation.

About the Department: The department was established in 1950, with an aim to make archaeology inter-disciplinary. Its research in Prehistoric sites and Harappan Sites has led to not only national, but its international recognition, and it plays a vital role in the archaeology of India. Apart from its annual exploration and excavation, it engages in research to understand human history, with historical researches in ancient technologies. Departmental publications include a few famous books. Current research interests include studies relating to Paleoenvironment and human adaptations, understanding of the regional elements of Chalcolithic history of Gujarat as well as artifact analyses and interpretation.
The department houses a few laboratories, like Bio- anthropology lab, a chemistry lab, an instrument room, a computer lab, a drawing hall, a modelling studio, a seminar hall and multiple research rooms. They are all well-equipped. It also has a library with a rich collection of books. The department also is known for having the mortal remains of the Buddha, during its excavation of the Devnimori Stupa. It also has 2 museums, the Indus gallery and the Buddhist Gallery.
The Department is currently headed by Dr. Sushmita Sen. The faculty includes eminent scholars like
