Are you a history enthusiast with a passion for heritage management and excavation? The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has released a circular inviting applications for the engagement of Young Archaeologists (ASI-YA) to work within the National Mission on Monuments & Antiquities (NMMA).


This is a unique opportunity for qualified individuals to gain exposure to the documentation of antiquities, built heritage, and sites across India. Below are the essential details regarding eligibility, salary, and the application process for the 2026 cycle.

Job Responsibilities

Selected candidates will be primarily responsible for documenting antiquities held by ASI field offices. The role involves:

  • Documentation & Survey: Assisting field offices in fieldwork related to heritage management, survey, and documentation. Specifically, candidates will help document the approximately 58 lakh antiquities and over 6 lakh unprotected Built Heritage Sites (BHS) in the country.

  • Research: Conducting research on topics such as archaeology (excavation/exploration), art, architecture, numismatics, and iconography.

  • Data Scrutiny: Scrutinizing data generated by ASI field offices and agencies that have MoUs with the NMMA.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the ASI-YA position, candidates must meet the following academic and age requirements:

  • Essential Qualification: A Master's degree in Ancient History and Archaeology, Ancient Indian History and Culture and Archaeology, or Archaeology from a recognized University or Institute.

  • Desirable Qualification: P.G. Diploma in Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology (ASI) or an equivalent qualification, or a maximum of two years of relevant work experience.

  • Skills: Candidates must have excellent knowledge of computer software like MS Office and Photoshop, as well as proficiency in English, Hindi, and/or regional languages.

  • Age Limit: Candidates must be below 38 years of age as of January 1, 2026.

Note: Priority will be given to candidates with at least 1 year of experience in documentation of Antiquities and BHS in the NMMA format.

Salary and Perks

  • Monthly Remuneration: A consolidated amount of Rs. 40,000/- per month. This amount is inclusive of Transport Allowance and HRA.

  • Increments: There is a provision for an annual increase of 5% subject to satisfactory performance.

  • Travel Allowances: Young Archaeologists are allowed to undertake domestic tours with travel permitted by Rail in AC Three Tier. Daily reimbursements for hotel accommodation (up to Rs. 1000/day) and food (up to Rs. 300/day) are also provided during tours.

  • Leave: 8 days of leave are allowed in a year on a pro-rata basis.


Tenure and Selection

  • Duration: The engagement is initially for one year, which may be extended by another year based on performance and functional requirements.

  • Selection Process: Candidates will be selected by an Expert Committee formed by the ASI, which will conduct interviews.

  • Training: Selected candidates will undergo 4–6 weeks of orientation training to acquire job-related skills.

Q.5. Do we just have to send the supporting documents with the prescribed format at the given address by post only? There are no online submission portal ?

Q.6. Person with only master's degree can apply ,will they prefer as guidelines they have asked for PGDA students or person with two year experience as their desirable Qualification.

A.6. While Master's candidates are fully eligible to apply, selection remains at the discretion of the interview panel, who may prioritize those with desirable qualifications like PGDA or experience. Ultimately, your success depends on a standout performance and demonstrating that your specific academic expertise aligns with the panel's requirements.

Q.17. I have a Master’s in Archaeology with academic fieldwork during post-graduation but no post-degree experience. Am I eligible to apply for the Young Archaeologist position?

A.17. Yes because Experience is a Desirable Qualification, not an Essential Qualification


Q.18. You said yes to one of the questions in which a person was pursuing a diploma. Then why can't a final year master student can't apply for this?

A.18. Because a Post Graduate Diploma is done after the Post Graduation (Masters). It means the candidate already have a Master's that's how he got into Diploma.. so technically, he's eligible as per the Circular. Please read Circular Carefully it say "Essential Qualification: A Master's degree", and PGDA and Experience is Desirable Qualification.


Q.19. I'm Mukant Bishwas, from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I've completed MA in AIHC & Archaeology from Banaras Hindu University and BSS and MSS in Archaeology from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh?
