Explore the Origins of Humanity: Cuddapah Basin Palaeoanthropology Field School,

Do you have an interest in science and the world around you?

Would you like the remarkable opportunity to visit one of the most remote and interesting Prehistoric sites in the Cuddapah Basin?

The Archaeological Science Centre (ASC), Department of Earth Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), invites applications for its Winter 2025 Field School program.

Program Overview & Dates Organized By: Archaeological Science Centre, Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar, founded in 2008, is known for its student-centric philosophy and unique educational experience, and is India's first 5-star GRIHA LD (Green) campus).

Location: Cuddapah Basin, Andhra Pradesh Program Dates: December 17-21, 2025

What You Will Experience

The Cuddapah Basin Palaeoanthropology Field School is a multidisciplinary field-training program focusing on Palaoanthropology and Quaternary Studies. The Cuddapah Basin is renowned for its wealth of fossils and artifacts documenting all major stages of human development.

This field school addresses critical knowledge gaps that often remain outside formal academic curricula. While the Indian subcontinent holds invaluable clues to understanding the Quaternary period (2.58 million years ago to the present)—a time that profoundly shaped human evolution—the hands-on methods required to study this period are rarely taught in universities.

Participants will examine the paleontology, archaeology, and ancient environment surrounding the Cuddapah Basin.

Participants gain rare, experiential training in:

  1. Palaeoanthropology, Geology, and Archaeology.

  2. Practical training in surveying sites.

  3. Interpreting geological stratigraphy.

  4. Collecting scientific samples for dating and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.

These tools empower participants to study human–climate interactions in a holistic way. The Cuddapah basin is an ideal location due to nearly a decade of robust, multidisciplinary research conducted there, focusing on sedimentology, stratigraphy, Palaeontology, Stone tools, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
