3 Vacancies for Archaeology and Graduate in any Social Science discipline: ICSSR-sponsored research project at IGNTU, 2026

The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology at the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh, is inviting applications from eligible scholars and researchers. The recruitment is for an ICSSR-sponsored research project titled “Archaeological Investigations of Prehistoric Cultural Landscapes and Environments in the Upper Son Valley”.


This project offers an excellent opportunity for researchers specializing in social sciences, humanities, and specifically ancient Indian history and prehistoric archaeology to gain hands-on field experience and contribute to significant archaeological investigations.


Key Highlights


  • Prestigious Sponsorship: The research project is fully sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).

  • Project Focus: The research focuses on the prehistoric cultural landscapes and environments located in the Upper Son Valley.

  • Flexible Tenure: While the positions are temporary, the duration (03 to 06 months) may be extended depending on the specific requirements of the fieldwork.

  • Online Selection Process: Shortlisted candidates will be notified via email or telephone to appear for a convenient online interview.

  • Inclusive Eligibility: Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) are eligible for a 5% relaxation in the minimum qualifying examination marks (as per Government of India norms).

The project is currently seeking to fill three temporary vacancies: one Research Assistant and two Field Investigators. Candidates may only apply for one of the two positions.

• Ph.D./M.Phil./NET/JRF • Postgraduate degree in Social Science / Humanities / Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology or related disciplines • Minimum 55% marks

• Specialization in Prehistoric Archaeology


• Experience in projects/research with knowledge of SPSS


• Computer knowledge


• English writing skills

Field Investigator

• Graduate in any Social Science discipline


• Minimum 55% marks


Preference given to candidates with a four-year graduation program

• Computer knowledge


• English writing skills

Terms and Conditions

  • The appointments are strictly on a temporary basis, and continuation is subject to satisfactory performance and project requirements.

  • Selected candidates cannot claim any regular or part-time appointments at IGNTU or any other institute during their tenure.

  • Incomplete applications will be automatically rejected.

  • Any form of canvassing will lead to immediate disqualification.
