About the Department:

The department was established in 1950, with an aim to make archaeology inter-disciplinary. Its research in Harappan Sites has led to not only national, but its international recognition, and it plays a vital role in the archaeology of India. Apart from its annual exploration and excavation, it engages in research to understand human history, with historical researches in ancient technologies. Departmental publications include a few famous books. Current research interests include studies relating to Palaeoenvironment and human adaptations, understanding of the regional elements of Chalcolithic history of Gujarat as well as artifact analyses and interpretation.


The department houses a few laboratories, like Bio- anthropology lab, a chemistry lab, an instrument room, a computer lab, a drawing hall, a modelling studio, a seminar hall and multiple research rooms. They are all well-equipped. It also has a library with a rich collection of books. The department also is known for having the mortal remains of the Buddha, during its excavation of the Devnimori Stupa. It also has 2 museums, the Indus gallery and the Buddhist Gallery.


The Department is currently headed by Dr. Sushmita Sen. The faculty includes eminent scholars like Dr. Vrushab Mahesh, Dr. Urmi Ghosh Biswas, Dr. Shasi Mehra.
