Your Mission
As a key member of UNESCO's Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, you'll spearhead groundbreaking initiatives to safeguard our planet's submerged archaeological treasures. This role offers a unique opportunity to blend scientific expertise with global diplomacy in service of cultural preservation.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific Leadership
Serve as UNESCO's underwater archaeology expert and scientific focal point
Drive implementation of the 2001 Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage
Baltic Sea Project Coordination
Lead multilateral cooperation initiatives for underwater heritage protection in the Baltic Sea
Organize stakeholder consultations and develop comprehensive protection strategies
Identify funding partners and communication opportunities
Climate Action Integration
Pioneer efforts to integrate underwater cultural heritage into climate resilience strategies
Develop pilot projects addressing climate change impacts on coastal and underwater sites
Support implementation of UNESCO's climate change adaptation frameworks
International Mission Assessment
Evaluate underwater archaeological missions, including the Skerki Bank project
Document results and extract valuable lessons for future initiatives
What We're Looking For
Essential Qualifications
Education & Experience
Master's degree in cultural studies
Minimum 9 years of professional cultural experience
4+ years of international-level expertise
Specialized Expertise
Proven underwater archaeology and heritage protection experience
Strong multilateral cooperation project coordination skills
Expertise in global consultations and stakeholder management
Advanced GIS data handling and heritage inventory capabilities
Technical Skills
Excellent research, analysis, and documentation abilities
Strong IT proficiency
Event coordination and awareness campaign experience
Languages
Excellent English and French (spoken and written)
Additional UN languages preferred
Desirable Assets
UN system experience
Expert knowledge of UNESCO Culture Programmes
Global multi-stakeholder consultation experience
