Syllabus: The course curriculum includes the following papers- Introduction to Heritage; History, Theory and Concepts of Conservation; Heritage Legislation and Policy; Cultural Heritage Management; Natural Heritage management; Documentation and Condition Assessment; Art and Material Conservation: hands-on practical session; Community Archaeology and Sustainability, Research Methodology in Conservation and additionally, a Dissertation.

Objective: A course on conservation aims to train one for

  • Reading of monument or site and identify its emotional and cultural significance

  • Understand history and technology of the heritage structures in or to define their identify, plan for their conservation.

  • Understand the setting of the heritage structures and their contents and surrounding in relation to other buildings, gardens and landscape.

  • Find and absorb all available sources of information relevant to the historical structure.

  • Understand and analyses the behaviour of the monument in the complex system.

  • Diagnose intrinsic and extrinsic causes of decay for appropriate action.

  • Inspect and make reports to non-specialists readings of the monument.

  • Through this course, the institution aims to provide Sound theoretical knowledge and practical experience in conservation and qualified teachers/experts; Library and documentation center providing computerized information reference collection, facilities for co- ordinate research and access to enterprise international network; Practical training in dealing with archaeological objects of varied nature and fully equipped facilities including lecture spaces, audio-visual equipment, laboratories, and workshop and seminar rooms.

With the growing importance of Marine Archaeology as a discipline in the sphere of archaeology, Deccan College, Pune and the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa collaborates to study the coastal archaeological sites of India. As a part of this effort, a one year diploma course is introduced.


Objectives:

  • To impart a detailed understanding of up-to-date techniques and methods of relevance for marine archaeology.

  • To explain the strategies employed in archaeological survey and investigation under water.

  • To understand archaeological registration and documentation in underwater.

  • To develop a range of research-oriented skills appropriate for conducting archaeology under water
