3 Days, International Conference on the Decipherment of the Indus Script - ASI, 2025

Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, will host an international conference entitled "Decipherment of Indus Script: Current Status and Way Forward." The conference is scheduled to occur from August 20 to 22, 2025, at the Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute of Archaeology in Greater Noida.

To participate, registration is required.

Background

Since its discovery in the 1870s, the Indus script has remained one of history’s greatest unsolved mysteries. Etched onto seals, tablets, and pottery from the ancient Harappan civilization, this enigmatic writing system has eluded decipherment for over a century, despite extensive study—including the first official report on excavations at Mohenjo-daro in 1931, which had a section on the ‘Indus Script’. It also listed different symbols and their variants.

This conference will bring together scholars and researchers to share findings, foster collaboration, and advance our understanding of this ancient writing system.

Conference Structure

The conference will feature presentations, available both in-person and virtually, organized into thematic sessions. These presentations will be succeeded by discussions aimed at facilitating the exchange of ideas. To promote thorough discourse, participants are required to submit papers (exclusively on Indus script decipherment) prior to the conference.

Students & Researchers wishing to present papers (only on Indus script decipherment)are required to submit their completed work prior to the conference date.
