About
The K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies brings together three institutions that have an established presence in the field of religion, culture, and philosophy: the Bharatiya Sanskriti Peetham, the Centre for Buddhist Studies, and the Centre for Studies in Jainism. Together, we bring an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of Indian religious and philosophical traditions, through programs that range from academically rigorous Doctoral and Master’s degrees, to certificate courses that engage with the interests of the larger community.
AIHC & Archaeology Department
This program emphasizes developing analytical and critical thinking skills as students engage with different aspects of ancient Indian culture from historical, philosophical, and anthropological perspectives. Trade and transmission of ideas across the sub-continent, rock-cut architecture, iconography, and Indian aesthetics are themes developed in year one that are sustained in the second year with in-depth learning.
As with all our programs, there is a strong focus on developing research skills. For this, an audit course is compulsory each semester, and students can study any of the other classical languages we teach – Prakrit, Pali, Sanskrit, and Tibetan.
How to become a Somaiya student
The K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies offers MA programs in Sanskrit, Pali, Yogashastra, Buddhist Studies, Jainology and Prakrit, Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, and China Studies.
