UNESCO Adds Santiniketan, West Bengal, to World Heritage List

In a historic decision, Santiniketan, West Bengal, has been officially recognized as UNESCO's 41st World Heritage Property from Bharat. This momentous achievement was made during the extended 45th World Heritage Committee Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Santiniketan's nomination was proposed under criteria (iv) and (vi) and had been on UNESCO's tentative list since 2010. The nomination dossier was submitted in January 2021.

The unanimous decision to include Santiniketan was taken by the 21-nation World Heritage Committee, including Bharat, without further discussion.

Bharat now boasts a total of 41 World Heritage sites, comprising 33 cultural, 7 natural, and 1 mixed property. This places Bharat alongside countries like Italy, Spain, Germany, China, and France.

This remarkable achievement reflects Bharat's commitment to promoting its culture and heritage, championed by the Hon'ble Prime Minister.

Santiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1863, embodies his visionary work, promoting global unity through ancient, medieval, and folk traditions under the banner of "Visva Bharati."

A proud moment for Bharat and its rich cultural heritage!
